What is an Overflow Relief Gully (ORG)?

An overflow relief gully (ORG) is a component of your properties plumbing system. It is designed to release grey or sewage water away from your house in case of a sewer line blockage rather than the waste come up though your kitchen or bathroom.

What does it look like and where is it located?

An ORG is a small round grate (approx 100mm) made of either plastic of metal and is usually located somewhere near the bathroom, kitchen or laundry. If you follow your properties pipes you should locate it.

Do all properties have an ORG?

Houses built before 1970 that have not had any plumbing work done may not have an ORG. Houses built after the mid seventies should have an ORG  located near an external wall usually made of concrete approximately 75mm above the ground.

Check your ORG to ensure:

  • It has not been covered by gardens or landscaping
  • It has not been covered by a pot plant or other obstruction
  • The grate has not been concreted in as it should pop out easily in case of a blockage.
If you do not have an ORG you should contact your local plumber.
